After beginning her writing career as a journalist, Chilean-American author Isabel Allende (b.1942) became famous with the publication of her first novel, The House of the Spirits, an instant best-seller in 1982. She has gone on to write many more novels, children’s books and story collections, becoming one of the most widely read Spanish language authors in the world. She has won numerous awards for her writing and was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014. Having lived in California with her second husband since 1989, she became a US citizen in 1993. Former Chilean president Salvador Allende – who was assassinated in a 1973 military coup – was her father’s first cousin.
