Mark Twain #3 (239x300)Profile

One of the eleven original authors in the card game Authors, Mark Twain is widely considered the father of American literature.  Born as Samuel Langhorne Clemens in a “nearly invisible village” in Missouri in 1835 – the same year as the return of Halley’s Comet.  He died in Connecticut in 1910 – shortly after the comet was seen again.  During the 75 years between comet sightings, the man was highly prolific, writing numerous novels, short stories, poems, essays and non-fiction works.

Known for his biting satire and wit, his works were very popular and displayed a finely tuned mastery of distinctive American colloquialisms and slang not previously used in formal literature.   He frequently made of use of his fame to promote various causes, opposing slavery, animal cruelty and American imperialism.  He also seemed to revel in poking fun at organized religion, although his personal views regarding the nature of the Christian God were decidedly inconsistent over the span of his life and much of his anti-religious writing was published posthumously.
